Откуда произошла идиома long shot?
Выучить английский непросто. Особенно трудности вызывают идиомы. Но есть один беспроигрышный способ «заучивания» фразеологизмов. Суть заключается в том, что надо не только прочитать значение идиомы и благополучно о ней забыть, а изучить историю происхождения, фразы с ее использованием. Тогда в голове у вас сложится ассоциативный ряд и значение словосочетания отложится само собой. Сегодня предлагаю разобраться со значением фразеологической единицы «long shot».
Значение
- рискованное дело, далекая перспектива, почти безнадежная попытка
Фразеологизм употребляется, когда шансы на победу крайне малы, а человек все же надеется на счастливую случайность.
Example : It is a long shot, but it wouldn’t hurt to try.
Пример: Шансов мало , но попробовать можно.
Интересный факт
Происхождение фразы связано с военным флотом. Раньше пушки на суднах не могли стрелять вдаль. Для победы над врагом надо было подойти как можно ближе к кораблю противника и только затем сделать выстрел. Когда судно было слишком далеко, то шансы попасть в него из пушки близились к нолю. Отсюда и значение выражения long shot (досл. «длинный выстрел»): оно означало дело, практически обреченное на провал.
