Printed name: Meaning & 12 examples of when to use it in a sentence
Have you ever looked at somebody’s signature, either on a new law or a critical form and found that somewhere near their signature were the words “Printed name”?
Today, we’ll be analysing what “printed name” means, when you might see it, why it’s needed, and how it might be written.
Table of Contents
What does “printed name” mean?
“Printed name” is the name of the person who is due to sign. It will be written out, usually by a computer, so that people can read it correctly.
Most of the time, our signatures are rather shabby and hard to read. So having the “print name” makes it easier to figure out who the signature belongs to.

Purpose of signature
Firstly though, let’s look at the purpose of a signature. Why do we need to have them? What purpose do they serve?
When you sign something, you are making an agreement. The signature indicates that you have read and understood the text and agree to the terms laid out in it. And to make a legally binding agreement, you will need to know what it is you’re agreeing to.
Essentially, your signature is your way of saying, “I have read this document, and I agree to do what it tells me to do”.
Purpose of printed name
Of course, if you’re going to sign something anyway, why does it need to say your name?
The first reason is so that you will know where to sign. If you see “Printed Name: John Smith”, John Smith will know to sign where it says “signature”.
It also makes it clear who signed it. Someone wanting to know who signed a specific contract will be able to look at the printed name and see that it was John Smith who signed it.
All of this just helps to make it clear that everything is as it should be.
Why signatures need a printed name next to them
This might make you wonder why our signatures tend to be so awful.
The first reason is that many of us would have been taught to write in “cursive”. This is the coca-cola font. Generally, this kind of writing isn’t the easiest to read.
Secondly, we write our name so often, we do it faster and faster until eventually, we just do it without really thinking. Or, perhaps it’s because we don’t handwrite too much at all anymore.
Many people write in elaborate and hard to read writing just so our signatures appear fancy.
But whatever the reason, the fact remains that signatures tend to be challenging to read.
Ways of writing the printed name
There are actually several different ways to write a printed name.
For example, you could have your first name and surname- John Smith.
You might have a title and surname- Mr Smith.
You could also have a title, the first letter of the first name, and surname- Mr J. Smith.
In some cases, you can have the first letter of first name and surname- J. Smith.
You could even have the full name of the title, first name, middle name, and surname- Mr John Taylor Smith.
All of these versions refer to the same person, and they all serve the same purpose.
Printed name vs print name
As well as “printed name” you might also see a line that says “Print name” and there is a difference between “printed name” and “print name”.
While the “printed name” will usually be written by a computer, the “print name” is filled out by the person signing.
“Print name” is your name written out in capital letters. Usually, this will be on forms that anyone can fill out, which therefore aren’t going to have your “printed name” written on them. Writing in capital letters means that people can quickly learn what your name is.
12 sentences that use “printed name”
“On which the printed name of “William R. Murphy” was erased , and the name of “Wm. Carter” written on the margin .”
“Also #VoterID, #NoBallotboxes and nothing without a printed name and signature!”

“In order to apply for a form. Then when I receive that form. I put those same 4 digits. My printed name and a signature. That is it. And that vote gets sent. Hardee to track that, then one that is in a file with a picture of the person next to it with their home address and phone number.”
“I mean, you would just withdraw from your own account. Changing the printed name does nothing, LOL.
“Airport Towards Ballinteer, I got on at O’Connell Street and got off at Harrold Cross park at 14:50 today. The Item was a black carbon fibre wallet, with the printed name “Yurylink”. If you have any info, please.”
Conclusion
And now you know what the “printed name” is.
When a form says “printed name”, it will be typed out on the computer, and near it, there will be another line for you to sign your name on.
The printed name shows who the signature belongs to and clarifies who the form was intended for.
Most of the time, when a form has a “printed” name on it, the form will have been written for or at least printed for the person signing it.
The information in the article might be helpful to you if you ever need to sign a contract and you see “printed name” and get a bit confused about what it means.
