Как правильно: «in» или «on the picture»? И в чем разница?

В этой статье мы продолжим говорить про каверзные предлоги и связанные с ними сложности. Сегодня я хочу рассказать вам

• про ошибку, которую допускал каждый, кто учил английский
• почему она возникает и что с ней делать
• в чем разница

1. Каждый допускал такую ошибку,

потому что каждого просили описать картинку. Учитель спрашивал: «What do you see here, Vasya?» , а потом по доброте душевной сразу сам переводил: «Что ты видишь на этой картинке, Вася? Ин ынглиш, плыз»

И Вася, судорожно сглотнув, отвечал:

— ON this picture I see.

2. Почему она возникает и что делать?

Потому что по-русски мы говорим «НА картинке» , а по-английски правильно будет «В картинке» (in the picture) . Для нас использование такого предлога непривычно, и в стрессовой ситуации мозг отправляет вагончик мыслей по хорошо известным рельсам. Поэтому мы и ошибаемся.

Чтобы исправить эту ошибку, нужно

• обращать на нее внимание
• не злиться
• использовать такое словосочетание каждый день на протяжении недели, например

3. А почему нельзя сказать ON the picture? В чем разница?

Ну почему ж сразу нельзя. Можно. Просто смысл изменится.

In the picture означает, что мы говорим о ком-то или чем-то, изображенном на картинке. Например, вот фотография нашей собаки — our dog is in the picture.

Cлова left и right — многозначные.

Cлово left, помимо того, что значит «левый», также по совместительству вторая и третья форма глагода leave — уходить, покидать, уезжать, или, если о предметах речь, то оставлять или забывать. Отсюда логично, что left overs — это остатки (недоеденное что-то). А если про человека сказать «he has left «, то смысл «он ушёл = его нет».

in the left picture — двусмысленно, то ли это «на уехавшей (убежавшей) картинке», то ли «на оставленной картинке»; при таком построении фразы, до значения «левый» у слова left, мозг носителя языка в процессе беседы в быстром темпе додуматься не успевает, так как сначала мозг услужливо подкидывает то, что забавно: «убежавшая картинка» — это смешно, мозгу развлекалово важнее (а вам или вашим детям экзамены сдавать — согласитесь, то не смешно ни разу)

Чтобы добиться однозначности, лучше говорить

• in the picture on the left — на картинке слева (по левую руку, с левой стороны)

in the right picture — двусмысленно, воспринимается или как «на правильной картинке», или как «на картинке, которая правА»; мозг опять веселится от двусмысленности — он у нас любит шутки, анекдоты, каламбуры — если можно понять неверно и посмеяться: это всегда пожалуйста. А экзамен?

Если всё серьёзно, то лучше говорить

• in the picture on the right — на картинке cправа (по правую руку, с правой стороны)

Что значит in the picture

In the picture is the common phrase to use when talking about the people or things shown when a photograph is taken. If someone or something is in a picture the picture shows that person or thing. It is a picture of that person or thing. If something is on a picture it is touching the picture. The picture itself is not showing that thing.

It is common to hear the phrase in the picture when someone is talking about usually people who are shown in a photograph, portrait, drawing, or other picture. Below are some examples of how this phrase is used.

• There were four people in the picture on the wall. [=four people are pictured; it is a picture of four people]
• I see your uncle in that picture! [=the picture is of your uncle]
• Who is that person next to you in the picture? [=who was next to you when the picture was taken?]
• Here is a picture from my party. My mother was there but she’s not in the picture. [=my mother did not have her picture taken at the party; she is not shown]

The phrase on the picture is not used to talk about who is shown in a photograph, and would only be used to talk about something touching a picture that is not represented as part of the image. Below are some examples of how this phrase is used.

• There is some dirt on the picture of our dog [=the picture has dirt on its surface] and it needs to be wiped off.
• Please don’t set your book down on these pictures [=on top of these pictures]; I’m trying to organize them.
• She put a heart-shaped sticker on the picture of us in the scrapbook. [=a heart-shaped sticker was added to the picture in the scrapbook]

Just remember: if you want to say who a photograph shows, use in the picture. If something external is touching a photograph, use on the picture.
