Что значит hear about

Анастасия Кэррол, автор блога о Японском Языке, которая всегда находит время зайти на мой сайт, и ужасно мне этим льстит)) попросила объяснить разницу между выражениями hear ABOUT и hear OF.

Разница, по большому счету, такая:

• hear about something — ты уже слышал о чем-то,но выясняешь детали (информацию),вдаешься в подробности

• hear of something — ты впервые узнаешь о том,что что-то (кто-то) существует.

Проще в примерах:
‘Have you heard about Julie and John?‘
‘I knew they were separated for a while. But tell me all about it.’

(ты слышал о Джулии и Джоне? — Я знаю,что они расставались на какое-то время, но расскажи-ка мне все об этом их деле)

‘Have you heard of the Beast of Bodmin?’
‘No, I’ve never heard of it.’

(Ты слышал о Бодминском Чудовище? – (о его существовании) — Нет,никогда не слышал о таком.

Ооо спасибо, а то постоянно путаю 😀 В английском еще много чего такого есть: dream of и dream about (хотя это я знаю), care of и care about. По-моему еще есть know of и know about, но это может быть просто тенденция. Но самое главное это разница между for и to (cute to others, и что-то там for others). Иногда разница такая неочевидная 🙂 Может, что-нибудь напишешь по этому поводу.

Что значит hear about

• Английский (американский вариант)

Hear- to listen to something; the brains ability to pick up on audible noise.
Hear of- «Have you ever heard of someone who didn’t like pizza?» It’s basically used as a reference or comparison of/to something
Hear about- «Did you hear about the girl who did a backflip with her eyes closed?»
Hear from- «Have you heard from Max about how his baseball game went?»

• Английский (американский вариант)

«hear of» is commonly used in the form of a question. It is usually used to express familiarity with a certain someone/something.
«Have you ever heard of the movie Frozen?»
«Did you hear of the little boy who fell down the well?»
«I’m sorry, but I have never heard of anyone by the name of Susan Smith.»
Hear about is essentially the same principle. It is just another way to word «hear of» it is also used to express familiarity.
«Did you hear about the party last night?»
«Did you hear about her new boyfriend?»
Hearing from is used to express the fact that you have gained informations from another person regarding a topic of interest. The person you «hear from» is the person that is giving you relevant information.
«Have you heard from Clara since she moved to Japan?»
«Did you hear from the teacher that our test is postponed?»
