Какая разница между “any time” и “anytime”? / Ask us anytime (or any time?)

by Patricia O’Conner

Q: Is there a difference between “any time” and “anytime”?

Вопрос : есть ли какая-то разница между словами “any time” и “anytime”?

A: The two-word version, “any time,” is a noun phrase that means something like “any amount of time” or “any particular time.”

Ответ : когда пишется в два слова “any time”, то это выражение-существительное, означает «любое количество времени» или «любое конкретное время»

Examples: “You never seem to have any time for your mother” … “Is there any time when you’re free next week?”

Примеры: «Похоже, у тебя никогда нет времени для своей матери». «У тебя будет свободное время на следующей неделе?»

The single word, “anytime,” is an adverb (that is, it modifies a verb), and its meaning is similar to “whenever,” “on any occasion,” or “at any time.”

Когда пишется в одно слово “anytime”, то это наречие (т.е. поясняет глагол), означает «в любое время», «в любом случае»

Examples: “You can call me anytime” …“He can sleep anytime.”

Примеры: «Можешь звонить мне в любое время». «Он может спать в любое время»

“The boss will see you anytime she has any time.”

«Начальница примет вас в любое время, когда у неё будет (свободное) время»

Interestingly, “anytime” is a relatively recent usage.

Интересно отметить, что слово “anytime” стали употреблять относительно недавно

Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary (11th ed.) says the adverb dates back only to 1926, but the Oxford English Dictionary has an earlier, century-old example.

Словарь Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary (11th ed.) сообщает, что оно появилось лишь в 1926 году, но в словаре Oxford English Dictionary приводится более ранний пример использования этого слова, столетней давности

Some usage guides say “anytime” is typically American.

Некоторые справочники говорят, что слово “anytime” — типично американское.
