Sustainable, Green, Recyclable – что эти термины означают в отношении упаковки?

Краткая предыстория.

Несколько десятилетий назад, когда были изобретены полимерные материалы – полиэтилен, полипропилен, лавсан и другие, человечество буквально захлебнулось от счастья. Ну как же, вместо тяжелых жестяных и стеклянных банок и контейнеров, стало возможно использовать легкую, практичную и недорогую упаковку из пластика.

Однако счастье это длилось недолго. Оказалось, что легкость создания такой упаковки и ее доступность, привели к тому, что планета в буквальном смысле оказалась завалена горами такого мусора.

Только в мировой океан ежегодно попадает больше 8 миллионов тонн пластика. В основном это упаковка.

В этот момент человечество задумалось – как же избавиться от этих гор пластикового мусора?

Идей было много:

— Хоронить отходы упаковки на полигонах ТБО (проще говоря на скалках) – место быстро закончилось, даже экспорт мусора не помогал.

— Сжигать. До сих это один из самых эффективных способов утилизации.

— Сделать полимер разлагаемым в природных условиях.

— Сделать упаковку перерабатываемой и использовать ее повторно.

Способы утилизации

Так вот поговорим чуть подробнее про последние два способа.

Еще 10-15 лет назад считалось, что создание биоразлагаемого (bio-degradable) пластика – это панацея. Выбросил пустой пакет и он сам за пару месяцев в земле разложится на молекулы. Однако оказалось, что пакет разлагается не до молекул и атомов, а до мельчайших кусочков того же самого пластика. И этот микропластик начали обнаруживать сначала в воде, затем в рыбе. А уже после того, как микропластик обнаружили в человеческом организме, решили, что такой способ утилизации пластика человечеству точно не подходит, и, более того, опасен для живых существ.

А вот второй способ, перерабатывать пластиковую упаковку повторно и делать из нее упаковку вновь – вот этот способ на сегодняшний день признан наиболее эффективным. Поскольку при идеальном раскладе позволяет полностью исключить образование пластиковых отходов.

Однако оказалось, что человечество успело придумать множество различных видов пластика. И каждый из них обладает различными полезными свойствами. Например, полиэтилен легко сваривается, а лавсан – жесткий, не тянется и позволяет сохранить влагу и не пропускает кислород. Из таких двух пленок, полиэтиленовой и лавсановой, состоит, например. дойпак для майонеза, который есть практически в каждом холодильнике. Одна беда — переработать его практически невозможно. Или сопряжено с огромными трудностями. Поскольку, например, температура плавления полиэтилена 110 градусов, а температура плавления лавсана – 260. Не говоря о том, что эти полимеры имеют разную природу происхождения и не могут быть смешаны. Так что же делать? Как сделать так, чтобы упаковку можно было перерабатывать?

Recyclable Laminates and Pouches

Currently the majority of local authorities in the UK do not collect flexible films at kerbside, therefore the only route for some of these films to be collected for recycling is through front of store collections.

FFP are market leaders in the development of sustainable flexible packaging solutions and have in-depth knowledge of the current waste infrastructure. We have therefore developed mono material laminates that can be collected by returning to store with carrier bags as classified by OPRL and can offer outstanding functionality including high barrier options. These materials offer a sustainable alternative to complex multi material laminates that cannot currently be recycled.

All PE Laminate – FFPE

FFPE is a mono material PE (Polyethylene) laminate that can be recycled by returning to store with carrier bags, as classified by OPRL. FFPE can be provided with barrier options and has outstanding seal integrity so that it can be gas flushed with confidence. Available as pouches, pre-made bags, sachets and film-on-a-reel, FFPE is extremely versatile and the ideal sustainable packaging solution for a wide range of market sectors. It can be used for hot fill applications as well as for frozen foods and is also suitable for wet products and liquids.

FFPE has been developed for outstanding performance. All PE Structures have historically proved challenging to run due to the stretch in the film causing issues with the material running in register. FFP however have developed a solution that due to the laminate structure will run efficiently on existing lines without the need for capital investment and with no drop off in throughput.

To assist in maintaining product freshness, FFPE can also be supplied with a PE zip to address reseal ability without compromising on recyclability. If a zip isn’t required, the material also tears with ease without the need for lasering to make pack opening fuss-free for consumers.

All PP Laminate – FFPP

FFPP is a mono material PP (Polypropylene) laminate that from January 1st 2022, will be recyclable by returning to store with carrier bags, as classified by OPRL. FFPP is a lightweight material which is available in a range of formats such as pouches, pre-made bags, sachets and film-on-a-reel.

FFPP runs extremely well on existing machinery and is well suited to a wide range of categories. It is also suitable in some instances for microwaveable applications utilising FFP’s own Estersteam technology. This presents an exciting opportunity for brands and retailers on their sustainable journey, as it presents a lightweight flexible packaging solution that is microwaveable and will be recyclable in the UK utilising current waste streams from January 1st, 2022.

Available with barrier options, FFPP can also be supplied with a PP zip and reclose label to address reseal ability without compromising on recyclability.

Environmental conservation, sustainability and respect for the natural conditions of our planet are priorities for ATP. That is why all our products are made of 100 % recyclable materials. In fact, the components of our street lights and other outdoor furniture, including the exclusively formulated polymers S7 and T5, can be recovered and reused when the lifespan of the articles has ended. This initiative, pioneering worldwide, is a fundamental part of our commitment to the planet.

Apart from controlling the expenditure of natural resources, we strive to create an equipment which blends in perfectly with the place where it is supposed to be installed. This means that our products have been designed to respect the morphology of the location, highlight its own qualities and subtly embellish it without changing its essence.

Aware also of the importance of preserving the visibility of the firmament, and in line with the law on protection of the quality of the sky, we work simultaneously with astronomical observatories and astrophysical institutes –such as the Astrophysics Institute of the Canary Islands, which approves a great part of our products– to minimize the Upward Flux Fraction (UFF). Today, in many cases, we have managed to completely eliminate light pollution (UFF 0 %), what represents a breakthrough on the path to attaining a clean and clear sky.

We are the only manufacturer of public lighting and street furniture in the world who has been awarded the ISSOP seal (Sustainable Innovation Without Planned Obsolescence, in Spanish), bestowed by Feniss Foundation to those companies designing products for a long lasting performance, an easy repair and an economical recycling process at the end of their lifespan.

As its name indicates, this prize is only given to firms that produce goods which are free of planned obsolescence. It is imperative that these products can be updated with the latest technologies with no need of buying a new device, that they come with no hidden firmware or software that allows the manufacturer to act on them, and that they can be repaired at a lower cost than purchasing a replacement.

Likewise, it is essential for getting the seal that the warranty offered by the company is longer than the two years required by law, real and with no small print, and that the philosophy of the enterprise is based on sustainability, respect for the environment, solidarity, fair wealth distribution and recycling.

In ATP we have voluntarily certified ourselves under the ISO 14001:2015 «Environmental Management Systems» rule, which guarantees that each step in our production process is respectful with the environment and complies with the current regulations on the topic.

In order to obtain the ISO 14001, it is necessary to identify and control all the negative environmental impacts that the company may cause in the course of its activities, both directly (emissions of particles, CO, NO_x and SO₂ in welding and painting tasks, generation of waste, accidental spill of chemicals, etc.) and indirectly (ensure, for example, that the transport partners we work with have protocols to curb global warming).
